What is cefepime?

Cefepime is an antibiotic in a class of drugs called cephalosporins. Cefepime fights bacteria in the body.

Cefepime is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections including respiratory, skin, genital, urinary, bone, joint, and other infections. Cefepime will not treat a viral infection, such as the flu or common cold.

Cefepime may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about cefepime?

Using cefepime may cause you to have false results with a certain type of test that checks for glucose (sugar) in your urine. If you need to be tested for glucose in your urine, tell the healthcare provider or lab professional that you are using cefepime.

What should I discuss with my health care provider before taking cefepime?

Before taking cefepime, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or a stomach disorder such as colitis. You may need a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during therapy.

How should I use cefepime?

Cefepime will be given by a healthcare provider as an injection into one of your veins (intravenously) or into a muscle (intramuscularly).

If you are injecting cefepime at home, your healthcare provider will show you how and where to give yourself the injection. Do not use this medicine at home unless you fully understand how to give yourself an injection. Contact your healthcare provider for further instructions.

Cefepime is a dry powder that is mixed with a liquid to make it injectable. Once it has been mixed, the medication may be clear or yellow to light orange in color. Do not use any cefepime that has particles in it, or looks different from your previous doses. If you have any unused cefepime leftover after your treatment ends, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider how to dispose of it.

Never use a needle and syringe more than one time. With your medicine you should receive a puncture resistant container to put your needles and syringes into after you use them. Keep this container out of the reach of children or pets.

What happens if I overdose?

Symptoms of cefepime overdose may include confusion, hallucinations, muscle twitching or uncontrollable movements, fainting, extreme lightheadedness, seizures, and coma.

What should I avoid while taking cefepime?

Using cefepime may cause you to have false results with a certain type of test that checks for glucose (sugar) in your urine. If you need to be tested for glucose in your urine, tell the healthcare provider or lab professional that you are using cefepime.

Cefepime side effects

• an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; hives; or a rash);

• red or peeling skin rash;

• urinating more or less than usual;

• severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea;

• watery or bloody diarrhea; or

• weakness, unusual bruising or bleeding.

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Talk to your doctor if you experience:

• mild itchy rash;

• fever, headache, mild nausea;

• yeast infection of the mouth or vagina; or

• pain or tenderness where you injected the medication.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect cefepime?

Before using cefepime, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines

• mycophenolate (CellCept, Myfortic); or

• amikacin (Amikin), gentamcin (Garamycin), kanamycin (Kantrex), neomycin (Neo-Fradin), netilmicin (Netromycin), streptomycin, tobramycin (Nebcin, Tobi);

• a loop diuretic (water pill) such as furosemide (Lasix), bumetanide (Bumex), torsemide (Demadex), or ethacrynic acid (Edecrin); or

• another antibiotic.

If you are using any of the medicines listed above, you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment.

Vaccines (including flus shots) may not work as well while you are using cefepime. Talk with your doctor before getting any vaccine.

Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with cefepime. Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using cefepime. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before using any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal products.
