Cefdinir Suspension

Generic Name: Cefdinir Suspension (SEF-di-nir)
Brand Name: Omnicef

Cefdinir Suspension is used for:

Treating mild to moderate infections caused by certain bacteria.

Cefdinir Suspension is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.

Do NOT use Cefdinir Suspension if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Cefdinir Suspension or any other cephalosporin antibiotic (eg, cephalexin)
  • you will be receiving or have recently received a live typhoid vaccine

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Cefdinir Suspension:

Some medical conditions may interact with Cefdinir Suspension. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to a penicillin (eg, amoxicillin) or other beta-lactam antibiotic (eg, imipenem)
  • if you have a blood clotting disorder, kidney problems, seizures, diabetes, or stomach or bowel problems (eg, inflammation)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Cefdinir Suspension. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Probenecid because it may increase the risk of Cefdinir Suspension"s side effects
  • Live typhoid vaccine because its effectiveness may be decreased by Cefdinir Suspension

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Cefdinir Suspension may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Cefdinir Suspension:

Use Cefdinir Suspension as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • An extra patient leaflet is available with Cefdinir Suspension. Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
  • Cefdinir Suspension may be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take it with food to reduce stomach irritation.
  • Shake well before each use.
  • Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure your dose.
  • Do not take an antacid that has magnesium or aluminum in it within 2 hours before or after you take Cefdinir Suspension.
  • Do not take a product that has iron in it within 2 hours before or after you take Cefdinir Suspension. However, you may give Cefdinir Suspension along with iron-fortified infant formula.
  • Cefdinir Suspension works best if taken at the same times each day.
  • To clear up your infection completely, take Cefdinir Suspension for the full course of treatment. Keep taking it even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of Cefdinir Suspension, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Cefdinir Suspension.

Important safety information:

  • Cefdinir Suspension may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Cefdinir Suspension with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Cefdinir Suspension only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).

  • Long-term or repeated use of Cefdinir Suspension may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
  • Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
  • If you are taking Cefdinir Suspension and a product that contains iron, your stools may turn a reddish color. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
  • Diabetes patients - Cefdinir Suspension has sucrose in it. It may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.
  • Diabetes patients - Cefdinir Suspension may cause the results of some tests for urine ketones or glucose to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.
  • Cefdinir Suspension may interfere with certain lab tests (eg, Coomb tests). Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are using Cefdinir Suspension.
  • Use Cefdinir Suspension with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 10 years old who have diarrhea or an infection of the stomach or bowel.
  • Cefdinir Suspension should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 6 months old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Cefdinir Suspension while you are pregnant.
