Why is Brontex prescribed?

Brontex is used to relieve coughs and chest congestion in adults and children. It contains guaifenesin, which helps thin and loosen mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough up. It also contains a cough suppressant, the narcotic codeine.

Most important fact about Brontex

Brontex may cause you to become drowsy or less alert. Alcohol will intensify this effect. Driving, operating dangerous machinery, or participating in any hazardous activity that requires your full mental alertness is not recommended until you know how you react to Brontex.

How should you take Brontex?

Take Brontex exactly as described. When giving the liquid to a child, use a calibrated dropper to measure the dose.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at once.

Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from light.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any side effects develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine whether it is safe to continue taking Brontex.

At higher doses, Brontex may also cause light-headedness, drowsiness, slowed breathing, and an exaggerated sense of well-being.

Do not take Brontex if you are allergic to codeine or guaifenesin.

Special warnings about Brontex

Because it contains codeine, Brontex may cause drug dependence and tolerance with continued use.

Do not use this product in children under 2 years of age. Be cautious if the child has an allergy.

Do not take Brontex for the constant cough brought on by smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema unless your doctor recommends it. If your cough lasts for more than 1 week, tends to come back, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, check with your doctor.

Be sure to tell the doctor if you have any breathing problems, a severe abdominal condition, kidney or liver problems, an underactive thyroid gland, or an enlarged prostate. Also alert the doctor if you suffer from seizures, have had a head injury, or have recently had stomach, intestinal, or urinary tract surgery.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking Brontex

If Brontex is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Brontex with the following:

Alcohol
Antihistamines such as Actifed or Benadryl
Drugs used to treat anxiety or depression, such as Librium and Prozac
Sedatives such as Dalmane

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. The safety of Brontex during pregnancy has not been established. Brontex should not be taken if you are breastfeeding.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS AND CHILDREN 12 YEARS AND OLDER

The usual dosage is 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours, not to exceed 12 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours.

The usual dosage is 1 tablet or 4 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours. Do not take more than 6 tablets in a 24-hour period.

CHILDREN 6 TO 12 YEARS OF AGE

The usual dosage is 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours, not to exceed 6 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours.

Brontex

The usual dosage is 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours. Do not give tablets.

CHILDREN 2 TO 6 YEARS OF AGE

Brontex

Your doctor will determine the dosage according to weight. The recommended total daily dosage is 1 milligram per 2.2 pounds of body weight, divided into 4 small doses.

Overdosage

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately.

  Alternate periods of not breathing and rapid, deep breathing, bluish skin coloration, cold and clammy skin, constriction of the pupils of the eye, delirium, delusions, double vision, excitement, extreme sleepiness progressing to stupor or coma, flaccid muscles, hallucinations, low blood pressure, restlessness, slow, shallow, or labored breathing, slow heartbeat, speech disturbances, vertigo
