Azo-Gesic


Generic Name: Phenazopyridine (fen-AZZ-oh-PIH-rih-deen)
Brand Name: Examples include Azo-Gesic and Pyridium

Azo-Gesic is used for:

Relieving pain, burning, urgency, frequent urination, and other discomforts caused by irritation of the lower urinary tract. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Azo-Gesic is a urinary tract analgesic. It produces a local pain-relieving action on the inner lining of the urinary tract; however, it does not treat the cause of the symptoms.

Do NOT use Azo-Gesic if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Azo-Gesic
  • you have kidney problems

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Azo-Gesic :

Some medical conditions may interact with Azo-Gesic . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Azo-Gesic . However, no specific interactions with Azo-Gesic are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Azo-Gesic may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Azo-Gesic :

Use Azo-Gesic as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take this medicine with food or milk or after meals.
  • If you miss a dose of Azo-Gesic , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Azo-Gesic .

Important safety information:

  • If Azo-Gesic is taken with an antibacterial medicine to treat a urinary tract infection, do not take Azo-Gesic for more than 2 days.
  • Do not use Azo-Gesic for future urinary tract problems without first checking with your doctor.
  • Azo-Gesic may produce an orange to red color in urine and may stain bedding or undergarments. This effect is harmless.
  • Before you have any medical tests, tell the doctor that you are taking Azo-Gesic .
  • Do not wear soft contact lenses while taking Azo-Gesic as permanent staining of the lenses may occur.
  • PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Azo-Gesic during pregnancy. It is unknown if Azo-Gesic is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding, check with your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Azo-Gesic :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Cramps; headache; itching; stomach upset.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blue or purple skin color; sudden decrease in the amount of urine; unusual fatigue; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include bluish-coloring of the skin; easy bruising; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Proper storage of Azo-Gesic :

Store Azo-Gesic at room temperature (59 to 86 degrees F; 15 to 30 degrees C) in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Azo-Gesic out of the reach of children and away from pets.
