Astelin Spray


Generic Name: Azelastine Nasal Spray (a-ZEL-as-teen)
Brand Name: Astelin

Astelin Spray is used for:

Treating the symptoms of rhinitis (inflammation of the membranes lining the nose), including sneezing, itchy, runny nose, nasal congestion, or postnasal drip, caused by seasonal allergies or environmental irritants.

Astelin Spray is an antihistamine nasal spray. It works by preventing the release of histamine and reduces the symptoms of allergic reactions.

Do NOT use Astelin Spray if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Astelin Spray

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Astelin Spray:

Some medical conditions may interact with Astelin Spray. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Astelin Spray. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Central nervous system depressants (eg, lorazepam, phenobarbital) because depressant side effects of both medicines, such as drowsiness, may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Astelin Spray may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Astelin Spray:

Use Astelin Spray as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Before the first use of Astelin Spray, replace the screw cap on the bottle with the pump unit. Prime the delivery system with 4 sprays (or until a fine mist appears).
  • If 3 or more days have passed since the last use of Astelin Spray, reprime the pump with 2 sprays (or until a fine mist appears).
  • If you miss a dose of Astelin Spray, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Astelin Spray.

Important safety information:

  • Astelin Spray may cause drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that may be dangerous until you know how you react to Astelin Spray. Using Astelin Spray alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about which medicines cause drowsiness.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness (eg, sedatives, tranquilizers) while taking Astelin Spray. Astelin Spray will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Astelin Spray may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone you know may have taken Astelin Spray by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
  • Avoid spraying Astelin Spray in the eyes.
  • Astelin Spray is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 5 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Astelin Spray during pregnancy. It is unknown of Astelin Spray is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while using Astelin Spray, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Astelin Spray:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Bitter taste; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; fatigue; headache; nasal burning; nausea; nosebleed; runny nose; sore throat; sneezing attack.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

Proper storage of Astelin Spray:

Store Astelin Spray upright at controlled room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Protect from freezing. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Astelin Spray out of the reach of children and away from pets.
