Arthrotec

Generic Name: Diclofenac/Misoprostol (dye-KLOE-fen-ak/mye-soe-PROST-ole)
Brand Name: Arthrotec

Arthrotec is contraindicated in pregnant women because the misoprostol component can cause abortion. Misoprostol has been shown to cause the uterus to tear in pregnant women if it is used to induce labor or to cause an abortion after the first trimester of pregnancy. Arthrotec should only be given to women of childbearing age when nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy is required and the patient is at high risk of developing stomach ulcers or complications from stomach ulcers. Arthrotec may be prescribed only if the patient has had a negative pregnancy test within 2 weeks before beginning therapy; is capable of using contraception (eg, birth control pills); has received oral and written warnings of the serious side effects associated with misoprostol, the risk of failed contraception, and the danger to women of childbearing age who take Arthrotec by mistake; and will begin taking Arthrotec only the second or third day of the next normal menstrual period.Arthrotec is to be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. Do not share it with others.

Arthrotec is used for:

Treating joint swelling, pain, and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in patients who are at a high risk of developing NSAID-induced ulcers or their complications. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Arthrotec is an NSAID and prostaglandin analog combination. The prostaglandin maintains prostaglandin activity needed to protect the lining of the stomach and reduce acid secretion, reducing the risk of ulcers. The NSAID decreases prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation, relieving joint pain.

Do NOT use Arthrotec if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Arthrotec or other prostaglandins
  • you are pregnant
  • you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, dizziness) to aspirin or an NSAID (eg, ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.
