Actonel with Calcium

Actonel with Calcium is used for:

Treating and preventing osteoporosis in women past menopause. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Actonel with Calcium is a bisphosphonate and calcium combination. It works by reducing bone breakdown and increasing bone thickness. This makes bones less likely to break.

Do NOT use Actonel with Calcium if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Actonel with Calcium
• you have blockage or narrowing of the esophagus, severe kidney problems, or if you have too much or too little calcium in the blood
• you are unable to sit or stand in an upright position for at least 30 minutes

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Actonel with Calcium :

Some medical conditions may interact with Actonel with Calcium . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have a history of kidney problems, kidney stones, stomach disease (eg, ulcers), or esophagus problems including difficulty swallowing

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Actonel with Calcium . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Antacids that contain calcium because the side effects of Actonel with Calcium may be increased

How to use Actonel with Calcium :

Use Actonel with Calcium as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Take risedronate once every 7 days on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before the first food or drink of the day. Take Actonel with Calcium with a full glass of water (8 oz/240 mL). Take Actonel with Calcium while standing or sitting up. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking Actonel with Calcium .
• Do not take risedronate tablets with coffee, tea, juice, milk, or other dairy drinks.
• Swallow risedronate tablets whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. Do not allow the tablet to melt or dissolve in your mouth.
• If you also take iron supplements, vitamins, or antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, do not take them within 2 hours after taking Actonel with Calcium . Check with your doctor if you have questions.
• Your doctor may instruct you to take vitamin D supplements if your dietary intake is inadequate. If so, take them at a different time of day than risedronate, according to your doctor"s instructions.
• Take the calcium tablets once daily with food except on the day you take risedronate.
• If you miss a dose of calcium, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
• If you miss a dose of risedronate and you take it once weekly, take 1 tablet on the morning after you remember and then return to taking 1 tablet once a week, on your originally scheduled day. Do not take 2 tablets at once.

Important safety information:

• Actonel with Calcium may cause dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Actonel with Calcium with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
• Contact your health care provider if difficulty or pain upon swallowing, upper back pain, or severe or persistent worsening of heartburn occurs.
• Actonel with Calcium may interfere with chemicals used for bone imaging. Be sure to tell your doctor that you are using Actonel with Calcium if you are having bone x-rays.
• If you are having any type of surgery and cannot sit or stand upright following surgery, check with your doctor about taking Actonel with Calcium .
• LAB TESTS, including calcium levels, may be performed while you use Actonel with Calcium . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Actonel with Calcium should not be used in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Actonel with Calcium while you are pregnant. It is not known if Actonel with Calcium is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Actonel with Calcium , check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Actonel with Calcium :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal skin sensations; anxiety; back pain; belching; bone pain; bronchitis; cataracts; chills; constipation; cough; depression; diarrhea; dizziness; dry mouth; feeling of a whirling motion; fever; flu-like symptoms; gas; headache; indigestion; infection (fever, chills, sore throat); itching; joint or tendon disorder; joint pain; leg cramps; muscle aches; nausea; neck pain; pain; rectal disorder; ringing in the ears; runny nose; sinus swelling; sleeplessness; stomach pain; tooth disorder; vomiting; weakness.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; difficult or painful swallowing; ear infection; fainting; hernia; pneumonia; severe heartburn; severe stomach pain; swelling of the eye; swelling of the legs and feet; urinary tract infection.

Store Actonel with Calcium at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Actonel with Calcium out of the reach of children and away from pets.
