The varicella virus causes chickenpox in children. When this virus become active again during adulthood, it can cause a condition called herpes zoster, or shingles. Zoster vaccine live is used to prevent herpes zoster virus (shingles) in people age 60 and older. Zoster vaccine live will not treat shingles or pain caused by shingles (post-herpatic neuralgia). Zoster vaccine live may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. What is the most important information I should know about zoster vaccine live?Do not receive this vaccine if you have a history of asthma or a muscle disorder, active untreated tuberculosis, an allergy to beef or pork products, or a history of allergic reaction to neomycin (Mycifradin, Neo-Fradin, Neo-Tab). You should not receive this vaccine if you have a type of cancer that affects bone marrow, if you are receiving medicines that weaken your immune system (such as steroids or cancer treatments), or if you have HIV, AIDS, or an infection related to either condition.Before receiving zoster vaccine live, tell your doctor if you have a fever or any type of infection, if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a vaccine, or if you have ever had shingles. If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to receive this vaccine, or you may need to wait until a later time when you are well. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
