TobraDex Ointment

Generic Name: Tobramycin/Dexamethasone Eye Ointment (toe-bra-MYE-sin/dex-a-METH-a-sone)
Brand Name: TobraDex

TobraDex Ointment is used for:

Treating eye inflammation and bacterial infection.

TobraDex Ointment is an antibiotic (tobramycin) and steroid (dexamethasone) combination eye ointment. The antibiotic works by killing bacteria and the steroid reduces redness, irritation, and swelling.

Do NOT use TobraDex Ointment if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in TobraDex Ointment
  • you have herpes simplex, vaccine, varicella, or any other viral, mycobacterial, or fungal eye infection

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using TobraDex Ointment:

Some medical conditions may interact with TobraDex Ointment. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have thinning of the cornea or the white part of the eye
  • if you have diabetes

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with TobraDex Ointment. Because little, if any, of TobraDex Ointment is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if TobraDex Ointment may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use TobraDex Ointment:

Use TobraDex Ointment as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • TobraDex Ointment is only for the eye. Do not get it in your nose or mouth.
  • To use TobraDex Ointment in the eye, first, wash your hands. Using your index finger, pull the lower eyelid away from your eye to form a pouch. Squeeze a thin strip of ointment into the pouch. After using TobraDex Ointment, gently close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes. Wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them. Wipe the applicator tip with a clean, dry tissue.
  • To prevent germs from contaminating your medicine, do not touch the applicator tip to any surface, including the eye. Keep the container tightly closed.
  • Do not wear contact lenses while you are using TobraDex Ointment. Take care of your contact lenses as directed by the manufacturer. Check with your doctor before you use them.
  • Using TobraDex Ointment at the same time each day will help you to remember to use it.
  • To clear up your infection completely, use TobraDex Ointment for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.
  • If you miss a dose of TobraDex Ointment, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use TobraDex Ointment.

Important safety information:

  • TobraDex Ointment may cause blurred vision. Use TobraDex Ointment with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks if you cannot see clearly.

  • Long-term or repeated use of TobraDex Ointment may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
  • Do not use TobraDex Ointment for future eye problems unless directed by your doctor.
