Succimer


Generic Name: Succimer (SUX-ih-mer)
Brand Name: Chemet

Succimer is used for:

Treating lead poisoning.

Succimer is a lead chelator. It works by trapping lead in the body and removing it in the urine.

Do NOT use Succimer if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Succimer

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Succimer :

Some medical conditions may interact with Succimer . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you are dehydrated or you have liver or kidney problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Succimer . However, no specific interactions with Succimer are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Succimer may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Succimer :

Use Succimer as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Succimer may be taken with or without food.
  • Swallow Succimer whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
  • If you have difficulty swallowing the capsule, empty the contents onto a small amount of soft food. Eat the food right away without chewing. You may also eat the contents of the capsule from a spoon. After eating, follow with a fruit drink.
  • Drinking extra fluids while you are taking Succimer is recommended. Check with your doctor for instructions.
  • If you miss a dose of Succimer , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Succimer .

Important safety information:

  • Succimer may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Succimer . Using Succimer alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • It is important to identify and remove the source of lead poisoning from your environment.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose or take Succimer for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
  • Succimer may low your body"s ability to fight infection. Prevent infection by avoiding contact with people with colds or other infections. Notify your doctor of any signs of infection, including fever, sore throat, rash, or chills.
  • Succimer may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and laboratory personnel know you are taking Succimer .
  • Succimer may cause incorrect test results with some urine ketone tests. Check with your doctor before you adjust the dose of your diabetes medicine or change your diet.
  • LAB TESTS, including complete blood cell counts, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Succimer with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 12 months of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Succimer during pregnancy. It is unknown if Succimer is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Succimer .

Possible side effects of Succimer :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Appetite loss; back, flank, rib, kneecap, leg, or head pain; decreased urination; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; headache; heavy head; hemorrhoids; loose stools; metallic taste in mouth; nausea; numbness or tingling of the skin; runny nose; stomach pain or cramps; tiredness; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); cold symptoms (eg, stuffy nose, cough); fever, chills, or sore throat; irregular heartbeat.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include clumsiness; convulsion; difficulty breathing; incoordination.

Proper storage of Succimer :

Store Succimer at room temperature, between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Succimer out of the reach of children and away from pets.
