Strattera

Generic Name: Atomoxetine (AT-oh-mox-e-teen)
Brand Name: Strattera

Use of Strattera may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Anyone considering the use of Strattera or any antidepressant in a child or adolescent must balance this risk with the clinical need. Patients who are started on Strattera should be watched closely for worsening of symptoms, suicidal thoughts and behavior, or unusual behavior changes. Families and caregivers should be aware of the need for close observation of the patient and communication with the doctor. Results from several studies in children and adolescents with certain psychiatric disorders have shown a greater risk of side effects related to suicidal thinking and behavior during the first few months of treatment with Strattera . No suicides occurred during studies in children and adolescents with ADHD.

Strattera is used for:

Treating ADHD as part of a full treatment program.

Strattera is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals in the brain.

Do NOT use Strattera if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Strattera
  • you are currently taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, phenelzine) within the last 14 days
  • you have narrow-angle glaucoma

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Strattera :

Some medical conditions may interact with Strattera . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver disease, high blood pressure, heart or blood vessel disease, a fast heartbeat, difficulty urinating, or bipolar disorder

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Strattera . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • MAO inhibitors (eg, phenelzine) because serious, sometimes fatal, reactions could occur
  • Quinidine or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine) because side effects and toxic effects may be increased
  • Albuterol because the risk of side effects may be increased by Strattera

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Strattera may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Strattera :
