Generic Name: Carisoprodol Tablets (kar-eye-soe-PROE-dole)
Brand Name: Soma

Soma is used for:

Treating discomfort associated with acute, painful conditions. It is usually used as a supplement to rest and physical therapy.

Soma is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking the signals from the spinal cord to the muscle.

Do NOT use Soma if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Soma or to related medicines (eg, meprobamate, mebutamate, tybamate)
  • you take sodium oxybate
  • you have the blood disease porphyria

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Soma :

Some medical conditions may interact with Soma . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Soma . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Sodium oxybate because an increase in sleep duration and a decrease in the ability to breath may occur

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Soma may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Soma :

Use Soma as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take with food if stomach upset occurs.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Soma .

Important safety information:

  • Soma may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Soma .
  • Soma will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask you pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur if you stand up too fast from a lying or sitting position. If this occurs, get up slowly and avoid sudden changes in posture.
  • PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING: If you are or plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Soma during pregnancy. Soma is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Soma .

Possible side effects of Soma :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Dizziness or lightheadedness when rising from a sitting or lying position; drowsiness; fast heartbeat; flushing of the face; headache; hiccups; nausea; upset stomach; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include coma; difficulty breathing; facial flushing; fainting; fast heartbeat; loss of consciousness; nausea; shock; stupor; unusual dizziness or drowsiness; vomiting.

Proper storage of Soma :

Store Soma at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Soma out of the reach of children and away from pets.
