Simulect


Generic Name: Basiliximab (bass-ih-LIX-ih-mab)
Brand Name: Simulect

Simulect is used for:

Preventing organ rejection in kidney transplant patients. It is used in combination with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Simulect is a monoclonal antibody. It works by blocking the immune response that causes transplant rejection.

Do NOT use Simulect if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Simulect

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Simulect :

Some medical conditions may interact with Simulect . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have cancer or an infection, or if you have been very ill

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Simulect . However, no specific interactions with Simulect are known at this time.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Simulect may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Simulect :

Use Simulect as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Simulect is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic.
  • If you miss a dose of Simulect , contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Simulect .

Important safety information:

  • Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Simulect .
  • Simulect may cause high blood sugar (eg, thirst, increased urination, confusion, drowsiness, flushing, rapid breathing, fruity breath odor). If these symptoms occur, tell your doctor immediately.
  • Simulect may lower your resistance to infection. Prevent infection by avoiding contact with people with colds or other infections. Do not touch your eyes or the inside of your nose unless you have thoroughly washed your hands first.
  • Consult your doctor before having any vaccinations while you are using Simulect .
  • Use Simulect with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • Women of childbearing age should use an effective form of birth control before, during, and for 4 months after using Simulect .
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Avoid becoming pregnant while you are using Simulect . If you think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Simulect during pregnancy. It is unknown if Simulect is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Simulect .

Possible side effects of Simulect :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Acne; constipation; diarrhea; headache; indigestion; nausea; runny nose; sleeplessness; stomach pain; tremor; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; dark, bloody stools; dizziness; fast heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; increased thirst or urination; painful urination; pain, swelling, or redness at injection site; pain, swelling, or redness at surgical site; shortness of breath; swelling of the hands or feet; unusual sneezing; unusual weakness or tiredness; wheezing.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Proper storage of Simulect :

Simulect will be stored by your health care provider. Keep Simulect out of the reach of children and away from pets.
