Roferon-A Solution


Generic Name: Interferon Alfa-2a Injection Solution (ihn-ter-FEER-ahn AL-fuh)
Brand Name: Roferon-A

Roferon-A Solution can cause or worsen some serious medical conditions, including psychiatric conditions (eg, depression), immune system problems (autoimmune conditions such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis), circulation problems (eg, cardiovascular disease, blood clots), or infections (bone marrow suppression). If your medical history includes any of these conditions, inform your doctor promptly. These conditions occur infrequently, but some can be fatal.


Roferon-A Solution is used for:

Treating certain types of leukemia and hepatitis. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Roferon-A Solution is an interferon. How Roferon-A Solution works is not fully understood. It is thought to work by helping the immune system fight tumor cells and viruses, as well as decrease their ability to reproduce.

Do NOT use Roferon-A Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Roferon-A Solution
  • you have certain liver problems (eg, autoimmune hepatitis, liver decompensation)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Roferon-A Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Roferon-A Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver problems (eg, hepatitis B), heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy or seizures, lung problems, thyroid problems, stomach or intestinal problems (eg, colitis, stomach or intestinal bleeding), eye or vision problems, kidney problems, or inflammation of the pancreas, or if you have had a heart attack
  • if you have immune system problems, bone marrow problems or low blood cell counts, bleeding problems, mental or mood problems (eg, depression), thoughts of suicide, trouble sleeping, chickenpox, shingles, HIV, or high blood cholesterol or lipid levels
  • if you have had organ transplant surgery
  • if you have a history of alcohol or other substance abuse or addiction

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Roferon-A Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), fluorouracil, or theophyllines because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • Any medicines that decrease your immune system following organ transplant surgery (eg, cyclosporine) because the effectiveness of Roferon-A Solution may be decreased
  • Interleukin-2 or zidovudine because the risk of bone marrow problems, worsening diabetes, or kidney problems may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Roferon-A Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Roferon-A Solution:

Use Roferon-A Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Roferon-A Solution comes with an additional patient information sheet called a Medication Guide. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Roferon-A Solution refilled.
  • Roferon-A Solution is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic.
  • If you are using Roferon-A Solution at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If the medicine contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial/container is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Drinking extra fluids while you are taking Roferon-A Solution is recommended, especially at the beginning of treatment. Check with your doctor for instructions.
  • Use Roferon-A Solution at bedtime unless directed otherwise.
  • If you miss a dose of Roferon-A Solution, check with your doctor for further instructions. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Roferon-A Solution.

Important safety information:

  • Do not change brands of Roferon-A Solution without discussing it with your doctor.
  • Roferon-A Solution will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants.
  • Roferon-A Solution may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Roferon-A Solution. Using Roferon-A Solution alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for selecting an appropriate container and properly disposing of the container when full.
  • Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Roferon-A Solution.
  • Diabetes patients - Roferon-A Solution may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
  • LAB TESTS, including liver function and complete blood cell count, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Roferon-A Solution contains benzyl alcohol, which may cause serious and sometimes fatal reactions in newborns and infants.
  • Roferon-A Solution is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 12 years of age and should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN 12 to 18 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in these age groups have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Roferon-A Solution may cause harm to the fetus. Avoid becoming pregnant while taking Roferon-A Solution. If you think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Roferon-A Solution during pregnancy. It is unknown if Roferon-A Solution is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Roferon-A Solution.

Possible side effects of Roferon-A Solution:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Appetite loss; changes in taste or hearing; chills; diarrhea; fatigue; flu-like symptoms; hair changes, including hair loss; headache; muscle and joint pain; nausea; pain or other reaction at the site of injection; stomach pain; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; bloody diarrhea; chest pain; dark urine or changes in amount of urine; difficulty sleeping; dizziness; drowsiness; fainting; fever; irregular heartbeat; mental or mood problems (eg, depression); persistent sore throat; pounding in the chest; psychotic or manic behavior; seizures; severe stomach/abdominal pain; suicidal thoughts; unusual bleeding or bruising; vision changes; vomiting blood.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include coma; extreme lethargy; fatigue.

Proper storage of Roferon-A Solution:

Store Roferon-A Solution in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. Keep Roferon-A Solution, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets.
