Risperidone


Generic Name: Risperidone Injection (ris-PER-i-done)
Brand Name: Risperdal Consta

Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic. It may increase the risk of death when used to treat mental problems caused by dementia in elderly patients. Most of the deaths were linked to heart problems or infection. Risperidone is not approved to treat mental problems caused by dementia.


Risperidone is used for:

Treating schizophrenia. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic agent. It works by altering the balance of chemicals in the brain that are responsible for thinking and behavior. It also can improve concentration and self control.

Do NOT use Risperidone if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Risperidone

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Risperidone :

Some medical conditions may interact with Risperidone . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have heart, liver, or kidney problems; a history of seizures; low blood pressure; low blood volume; a cancerous breast tumor; Parkinson disease; problems with the blood vessels supplying the brain (eg, stroke); psychosis due to memory loss; problems swallowing; diabetes; or memory loss
  • if you have had a negative reaction to antipsychotic medicines in the past or have a history of suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • if you are being treated for high blood pressure or are dehydrated

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Risperidone . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Carbamazepine because the effectiveness may be decreased
  • Phenytoin and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine) because the risk of side effects of Risperidone may be increased and dose may need to be adjusted
  • Clozapine because the actions and side effects may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Risperidone may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Risperidone :

Use Risperidone as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Risperidone is usually given as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Risperidone at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Risperidone . Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.
  • Do not use Risperidone if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.
  • Risperidone is injected into a muscle. Risperidone should not be injected into a vein.
  • Allow the product to come to room temperature before mixing. Particles will be visible in this liquid, but no dry particles should remain.
  • Use Risperidone on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it.
  • Using Risperidone at the same time(s) will help you remember to take it.
  • Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow all local rules for disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Risperidone , contact your doctor right away.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Risperidone .

Important safety information:

  • Risperidone may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Risperidone with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Risperidone may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
  • Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that may cause drowsiness (eg, sleep aids, muscle relaxers) while you are using Risperidone ; it may add to their effects. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines may cause drowsiness.
  • It may take a few weeks for the full effect of Risperidone to be seen. You may also be given oral medicine to take during this time. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions.
  • Do not become overheated in hot weather or while you are being active; heatstroke may occur.
  • Risperidone may increase your risk of developing diabetes or increase the level of sugar in your blood. High blood sugar levels can cause serious problems if left untreated. If you already have diabetes, be sure to check your blood sugar levels closely as directed by your doctor.
  • LAB TESTS, including liver function, kidney function, lung function, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and blood cholesterol, may be performed while you use Risperidone . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Risperidone with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially dizziness.
  • Risperidone should not be used in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Risperidone while you are pregnant. Risperidone is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Risperidone or for at least 12 weeks after you take the last dose of Risperidone .

Possible side effects of Risperidone :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Changes in weight; constipation; coughing; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; fatigue; headache; increased saliva; indigestion; leg pain; muscle aches; pain, swelling, or redness at injection site; runny nose; sinus infection; sleeplessness; tiredness; tooth disorder; upset stomach.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); altered mental abilities, including lack of response to your surroundings; changes in body temperature; chest pain; decreased sexual ability; difficulty in becoming pregnant; difficulty swallowing; enlarged breasts; fainting; flushing; fruity breath odor; hallucinations; inability to produce sperm; increased or irregular heart rate; increased thirst; increased urination; involuntary muscle movements; muscle rigidness; one-sided weakness; painful, prolonged erection; rapid breathing; seizures; stopping of menstrual period; sweating; thoughts of suicide; tremors; unexplained fever, drooling, numbness in the face, arms, or legs; unwanted breast milk production.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm ), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include: fainting; loss of consciousness; rapid pulse; seizures; unusual drowsiness; unusual muscle movement or rigidity of the face, neck, or limbs.

Proper storage of Risperidone :

Risperidone is usually handled and stored by a health care provider. If you are using Risperidone at home, store Risperidone as directed by your pharmacist or health care provider. Keep Risperidone , as well as needles and syringes, out of the reach of children and away from pets.
