Rifater


Generic Name: Isoniazid/Pyrazinamide/Rifampin (eye-soe-NYE-a-zid/peer-a-ZIN-a-mide/rif-AM-pin)
Brand Name: Rifater

Rifater has caused severe, even fatal, liver problems (eg, hepatitis). Liver problems increase with age and with daily use of alcohol. Hepatitis can develop with use of Rifater at any time during treatment. Stop using Rifater and notify your doctor immediately if you develop unusual fatigue, weakness, general feeling of discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or stomach or abdominal pain. Your doctor may decide to slowly restart isoniazid after these symptoms disappear and lab tests return to normal. People with active (acute) liver problems should not use Rifater . Your doctor will monitor your liver function and discuss your progress every month.


Rifater is used for:

Treating tuberculosis of the lungs.

Rifater is a combination of 3 antibacterial agents. It works by stopping the growth of and killing sensitive bacteria.

Do NOT use Rifater if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Rifater
  • you have severe liver damage or active liver disease
  • you have active gout
  • you have had severe side effects from isoniazid, such as drug fever, chills, or arthritis
  • you are taking voriconazole

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Rifater :

Some medical conditions may interact with Rifater . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have diabetes, the blood disease porphyria, liver or kidney problems, abnormal liver function tests, or a history of gout or inflammation of the colon due to antibiotic use (eg, pseudomembranous colitis)
  • if you have alcoholism or drink alcohol daily

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Rifater . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Many prescription and nonprescription medicines (eg, used for alcoholism, allergic reactions, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, birth control, blood pressure, blood thinning, cancer, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, Hansen disease, heart problems, HIV, hormone replacement, immune system suppression, infections, irregular heartbeat, mental or mood problems, nausea and vomiting, pain, seizures, sleep) may interact with Rifater by increasing the risk for side effects or decreasing effectiveness
  • Voriconazole because it may increase the risk of Rifater "s side effects.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Rifater may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Rifater :

Use Rifater as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Rifater by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
  • Do not take an antacid within 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take Rifater .
  • If you also take aminosalicyclic acid granules do not take it with in 8 to 12 hours of Rifater . Check with your doctor if you have questions.
  • Continue to use Rifater even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Rifater , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Rifater .

Important safety information:

  • Rifater may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Rifater . Using Rifater alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Check with your doctor before drinking alcohol while taking Rifater . Alcohol may increase the risk of liver problems.
  • Take Rifater by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
  • Do not take an antacid within 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take Rifater .
  • If you also take aminosalicyclic acid granules do not take it with in 8 to 12 hours of Rifater . Check with your doctor if you have questions.

Possible side effects of Rifater :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; gas; headache; heartburn; stomach upset or cramps; trouble sleeping.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; changes in vision; chest pain; chills or fever; confusion; dark urine; decreased urination; general feeling of discomfort; increased thirst or urination; irregular heartbeat; joint pain or swelling; loss of appetite; memory problems; menstrual changes; mental or mood changes; nausea; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe diarrhea; shortness of breath; speech problems; stomach pain; swelling of the legs; tightness in the chest; tingling or numbness in the hands or feet; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting; weakness on one side of the body; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include blurred vision; hallucinations; loss of consciousness; seizures; severe dizziness; sluggishness; slurred speech; stomach pain; unusually slow breathing; vomiting.

Proper storage of Rifater :

Store Rifater between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Rifater out of the reach of children and away from pets.
