Rifamate


Generic Name: Isoniazid/Rifampin Capsules (eye-soe-NYE-a-zid/rif-AM-pin)
Brand Name: Rifamate

Rifamate has caused severe, even fatal, liver problems (eg, hepatitis). Liver problems increase with age and with daily use of alcohol. Hepatitis can develop with use of Rifamate at any time during treatment. Stop using Rifamate and notify your doctor immediately if you develop unusual fatigue, weakness, general feeling of discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or stomach or abdominal pain. Your doctor may decide to slowly restart isoniazid after these symptoms disappear and lab tests return to normal. People with active (acute) liver problems should not use Rifamate . Your doctor will monitor your liver function and discuss your progress every month.


Rifamate is used for:

Treating tuberculosis (TB).

Rifamate is an antibacterial and anti-tuberculosis combination. It works by killing or stopping the growth of TB organisms.

Do NOT use Rifamate if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Rifamate or have had severe side effects from isoniazid, such as drug fever, chills, or arthritis
  • you have severe liver damage or active liver disease, active gout, or if you are taking voriconazole

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Rifamate :

Some medical conditions may interact with Rifamate . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have diabetes, the blood disease porphyria, kidney problems, liver problems, severe diarrhea due to antibiotic use (pseudomembranous colitis), or a history of gout
  • if you have a history of alcohol abuse or drink alcohol daily

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Rifamate . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Many prescription and nonprescription medicines (eg, used for alcoholism, allergic reactions, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, birth control, blood pressure, blood thinning, cancer, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, Hansen disease, heart problems, HIV, hormone replacement, immune system suppression, infections, irregular heartbeat, mental or mood problems, nausea and vomiting, pain, seizures, sleep) may interact with Rifamate by increasing the risk for side effects or decreasing effectiveness
  • Voriconazole because it may increase the risk of Rifamate "s side effects.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Rifamate may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Rifamate :

Use Rifamate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Rifamate by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating.
  • Do not take an antacid within 1 hour before or 2 hours after you take Rifamate .
  • If you also take aminosalicyclic acid granules do not take it with in 8 to 12 hours of Rifamate . Check with your doctor if you have questions.
  • Continue to use Rifamate even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Rifamate , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Rifamate .

Important safety information:

  • Rifamate may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Rifamate with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Check with your doctor before drinking alcohol while taking Rifamate . Alcohol may increase the risk of liver problems.
  • Rifamate may cause a reddish orange discoloration of urine, stools, saliva, tears, sweat, sputum, and skin. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
  • Rifamate may permanently discolor soft contact lenses.
  • While you are taking Rifamate , eating foods that contain histamine, such as fish, tuna, sauerkraut, and yeast extract, or foods that contain tyramine, such as Chianti wines, pickled herring, fermented meats, and some cheeses, may cause flushing, chills, headaches, or serious increases in blood pressure. Obtain a complete list of foods and beverages from your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Rifamate . To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).
  • Be sure to use Rifamate for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.
  • Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Rifamate before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Rifamate may interfere with certain lab tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Rifamate .
  • Diabetes patients-Rifamate may cause the results of some tests for urine ketones to be wrong. Ask your doctor before you change your diet or the dose of your diabetes medicine.
  • Lab tests, including complete blood cell counts, uric acid levels, liver function, and eye exams, may be performed while you use Rifamate . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Rifamate with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • Use Rifamate with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Rifamate while you are pregnant. Rifamate is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Rifamate .

Possible side effects of Rifamate :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; gas; headache; heartburn; stomach upset or cramps; trouble sleeping.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; changes in vision; chest pain; chills or fever; confusion; dark urine; decreased urination; general feeling of discomfort; increased thirst or urination; irregular heartbeat; joint pain or swelling; loss of appetite; memory problems; menstrual changes; mental or mood changes; nausea; ringing in the ears; seizures; severe diarrhea; shortness of breath; speech problems; stomach pain; swelling of the legs; tightness in the chest; tingling or numbness in the hands or feet; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting; weakness on one side of the body; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include blurred vision; hallucinations; loss of consciousness; seizures; severe dizziness; sluggishness; slurred speech; stomach pain; unusually slow breathing; vomiting.

Proper storage of Rifamate :

Store Rifamate between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Rifamate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
