Pyrazinamide


Generic Name: Pyrazinamide (peer-a-ZIN-a-mide)
Brand Name: Generic only. No brands available.

Pyrazinamide is used for:

Treating active tuberculosis in combination with other medicines.

Pyrazinamide is an antituberculosis agent. It works by killing or preventing the growth of certain bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

Do NOT use Pyrazinamide if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Pyrazinamide
  • you have gout or severe liver problems

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Pyrazinamide :

Some medical conditions may interact with Pyrazinamide . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have kidney or liver disease, the blood disease porphyria, diabetes, or HIV
  • if you regularly consume alcohol-containing beverages or have a history of alcoholism

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Pyrazinamide . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Rifampin because the risk of serious liver side effects may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Pyrazinamide may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Pyrazinamide :

Use Pyrazinamide as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Continue to use Pyrazinamide even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Pyrazinamide , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Pyrazinamide .

Important safety information:

  • Pyrazinamide is effective only against bacteria. It is not effective for treating viral infections (eg, the common cold).
  • It is important to use Pyrazinamide for the full course of treatment. Failure to do so may decrease the effectiveness of Pyrazinamide and increase the risk that the bacteria will no longer be sensitive to Pyrazinamide and will not be able to be treated by this or certain other antibiotics in the future.
  • Pyrazinamide may interfere with certain lab tests. Make sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are using Pyrazinamide .
  • LAB TESTS, including blood uric acid levels and liver function tests, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Pyrazinamide with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is unknown if Pyrazinamide can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Pyrazinamide , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Pyrazinamide during pregnancy. Pyrazinamide is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Pyrazinamide , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Pyrazinamide :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Mild joint or muscle pain or tenderness.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark urine; decreased urination; fever; general feeling of being unwell; loss of appetite; nausea; pain or swelling in the joints; severe dizziness; stomach pain; trouble breathing; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual tiredness or weakness; vomiting; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Proper storage of Pyrazinamide :

Store Pyrazinamide at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Pyrazinamide out of the reach of children and away from pets.
