Progesterone

Progesterone is used for:

Protecting the lining of the uterus in women on estrogen replacement therapy. It is also used to treat women who have had menstrual periods in the past but have stopped having them because of a lack of progesterone hormone. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Progesterone is a hormone. It works by changing the lining of the uterus.

Do NOT use Progesterone if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Progesterone or to peanuts
• you have a history of cancer of the breast, ovary, lining of the uterus, cervix, or vagina; vaginal bleeding of unknown cause; blood clots or clotting problems; or liver disease; or you have had a recent miscarriage; or have had a stroke or heart attack within the past year
• you are pregnant

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Progesterone :

Some medical conditions may interact with Progesterone . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are planning to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have heart or blood vessel problems, bleeding problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or lipid levels, diabetes, kidney problems, asthma, migraine headaches, or lupus
• if you have a history of seizures, depression or other mental or mood problems, cancer, or tobacco use
• if you have a family history of blood clots
• if you are very overweight

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Progesterone . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Rifampin because the effectiveness of Progesterone may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Progesterone may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Progesterone :

Use Progesterone as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Progesterone may be taken with or without food.
• Progesterone comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions that you may have about Progesterone .
• If you miss a dose of Progesterone and are only taking it at bedtime, take 1 capsule the following morning and go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you miss a dose of Progesterone and are taking a morning dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Progesterone .

Important safety information:

• Progesterone may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Progesterone . Using Progesterone alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• This product contains peanut oil. Do not take Progesterone if you are allergic to peanuts.
• Diabetes patients - Glucose tolerance may be decreased. Monitor blood sugar closely and report any abnormal results to your doctor.
• Progesterone may increase your risk of developing blood clots. If you will be having surgery or be confined to a bed or chair for a long period of time (such as a long plane flight), notify your doctor beforehand. Special precautions may be needed in these circumstances while you are taking Progesterone .
• Progesterone may affect certain lab test results. Make sure all of your doctors and laboratory personnel know that you are taking Progesterone .
• LAB TESTS and/or medical tests, such as monthly breast self-exams, yearly breast exams, Pap smears, and pelvic exams, should be performed to monitor your progress or to check for serious side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Progesterone is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Progesterone if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. Progesterone is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Progesterone , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Progesterone :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Back pain; breakthrough bleeding; breast pain; breast tenderness; constipation; cough; cramps; depression; diarrhea; dizziness; fluid retention; headache; hot flashes; irritability; joint pain; lightheadedness; muscle pain; nausea; night sweats; sleepiness or tiredness; upper respiratory tract infection; urinary problems; vaginal discharge; vaginal dryness; viral infection; vomiting; weight changes.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal vaginal bleeding; bulging eyes; coughing up blood; dark urine; double vision; fainting; gallstones; mental or mood changes (eg, severe depression or worry); migraine; numbness of an arm or leg; pain or lumps in the breast; one-sided weakness; pounding in the chest; seizures or tremors; severe stomach pain; speech problems; sudden, severe chest pain or numbness; sudden, severe headache; sudden, severe vomiting, dizziness, or fainting; sudden sharp pain or swelling in the calf or leg; sudden shortness of breath; stomach pain, swelling, or tenderness; swelling of the ankles or fingers; vision problems or changes (including sudden, partial, or full loss of vision); yellowing of the eyes or skin.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include dizziness; nausea; sleepiness; vomiting.

Store Progesterone at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Keep in a tight, light-resistant container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Progesterone out of the reach of children and away from pets.
