Progesterone

Generic Name: Progesterone Capsules (pro-JESS-ter-ohn)
Brand Name: Prometrium

Progesterone should not be used in combination with estrogen to prevent heart disease. Progesterone taken in combination with estrogen can increase the risk of heart disease (including heart attacks), stroke, serious blood clots in the lung (pulmonary embolism) or leg (deep venous thrombosis), breast cancer, or dementia. This combination may also increase the risk of cancer of the ovary. These risks appear to depend on the length of time this combination of medicine is used and the amount of estrogen per dose. Therefore, the combination of estrogen and Progesterone should be used for the shortest possible length of time at the lowest effective dose, so you obtain the benefits and minimize the chance of serious side effects for long-term treatment. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Progesterone is used for:

Protecting the lining of the uterus in women on estrogen replacement therapy. It is also used to treat women who have had menstrual periods in the past but have stopped having them because of a lack of progesterone hormone. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Progesterone is a hormone. It works by changing the lining of the uterus.

Do NOT use Progesterone if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Progesterone or to peanuts
  • you have a history of cancer of the breast, ovary, lining of the uterus, cervix, or vagina; vaginal bleeding of unknown cause; blood clots or clotting problems; or liver disease; or you have had a recent miscarriage; or have had a stroke or heart attack within the past year
