Paricalcitol


Generic Name: Paricalcitol Injection (par-ee-CAL-ih-tahl)
Brand Name: Zemplar

Paricalcitol is used for:

Preventing and treating high levels of parathyroid hormone in the blood due to long-term kidney disease.

Paricalcitol is a vitamin D compound. It works by blocking the formation and release of parathyroid hormone (PTH).

Do NOT use Paricalcitol if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Paricalcitol
  • you have high levels of vitamin D or calcium in the blood

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Paricalcitol :

Some medical conditions may interact with Paricalcitol . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have heart problems, hardening or narrowing of the arteries (arteriosclerosis), or high blood phosphate levels

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Paricalcitol . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Digitalis medicines (eg, digoxin) because risk of toxicity may be increased by Paricalcitol
  • Clarithromycin, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, saquinavir), imidazole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole), nefazodone, telithromycin, or voriconazole because side effects of Paricalcitol may be increased

How to use Paricalcitol :

Use Paricalcitol as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Paricalcitol is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Paricalcitol at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Paricalcitol contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Paricalcitol , contact your doctor for instructions.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Paricalcitol .

Important safety information:

  • Paricalcitol may cause lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Paricalcitol . Using Paricalcitol alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Carefully follow the diet instructions given to you by your health care provider, including instructions on vitamin D and phosphorus restrictions and calcium supplementation.
  • Before you begin taking any new prescription or nonprescription medicine, including vitamin or mineral products, read the ingredients to see if it contains vitamin D or phosphorus. If it does or if you are uncertain, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Avoid excessive use of aluminum-containing products (eg, antacids) while using Paricalcitol .
  • LAB TESTS, including blood calcium, phosphorus, and PTH levels, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Paricalcitol with extreme caution in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant while taking Paricalcitol , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Paricalcitol during pregnancy. It is unknown if Paricalcitol is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while you are using Paricalcitol .

Possible side effects of Paricalcitol :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Back or joint pain; diarrhea; feeling unwell; lightheadedness; nausea; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black tarry or bloody stools; chest pain; depression; fever or chills; irregular heartbeat; muscle cramps or spasms; pounding in the chest; stomach pain; swelling of the hands or feet; trouble breathing.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. High vitamin D levels, which can be dangerous, may occur if this medicine is used in higher doses than necessary. Symptoms may include bone or muscle pain; decreased sex drive; dizziness; fever; irregular heartbeat; loss of appetite; mental or mood changes; metallic taste in mouth; persistent or severe constipation, headache, nausea, or vomiting; seizures; sensitivity to sunlight (eyes); unexplained runny nose; unusual drowsiness; unusually dry mouth; vision changes; weakness; weight loss.

Proper storage of Paricalcitol :

Paricalcitol is usually handled and stored by a health care provider. If you are using Paricalcitol at home, store Paricalcitol as directed by your pharmacist or health care provider.
