Nevirapine

Generic Name: Nevirapine Tablets (neh-VYE-ra-peen)
Brand Name: Viramune

Life-threatening, sometimes fatal, liver problems and skin reactions have occurred in patients taking Nevirapine . Patients with higher CD4 counts and women (including pregnant women) are at higher risk. Stop using Nevirapine and contact your health care provider at once if signs of liver problems (tiredness; general body discomfort; loss of appetite; nausea; yellowing of the skin or eyes; pale stools; liver tenderness) or skin reactions (severe rash with or without fever; general body discomfort; tiredness; muscle or joint aches; blisters; mouth sores; swelling or redness of the eye; swelling of the face) occur. The risk of both skin and liver side effects is highest during the first 18 weeks of therapy, but these side effects can happen at any time. It is important to be frequently monitored by your doctor for the entire time that you are taking Nevirapine .

Nevirapine is used for:

Treating HIV infection. Nevirapine is not a cure for HIV. It must be used in combination with other HIV medicines. If Nevirapine is taken alone to treat HIV infection, it may stop working. Contact your doctor for more information. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Nevirapine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It works by blocking the growth of HIV.

Do NOT use Nevirapine if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Nevirapine
  • you have hepatitis or abnormal liver function test results
  • you are taking ketoconazole or St. John"s wort

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Nevirapine :

Some medical conditions may interact with this medicine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have kidney or liver problems, swelling of the abdomen, joint pain, an eye infection, fluid retention in the face, fatigue, a high CD4 count, fever, muscle pain, general body discomfort, mouth sores, or skin sores or rash, or you are on dialysis

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Nevirapine . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Rifampin or St. John"s wort because the effectiveness of Nevirapine may be decreased
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), efavirenz, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), ketoconazole, oral contraceptives (birth control pills), or narcotic analgesics (eg, morphine), because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Nevirapine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Nevirapine :

Use Nevirapine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Nevirapine comes with an additional patient information sheet called a Medication Guide. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Nevirapine refilled.
  • Nevirapine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.
  • Taking Nevirapine at the same time(s) each day will help you to remember to take it.
  • Continue to use Nevirapine even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Nevirapine , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
  • If you stop taking Nevirapine for more than 7 days, contact your doctor before you begin taking it again.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Nevirapine .

Important safety information:

  • Because HIV can quickly become resistant to Nevirapine when used alone, Nevirapine must be used with at least 1 other HIV medicine. Your doctor may change your treatment plan if Nevirapine stops working well.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose of this medicine without checking with your doctor. Exceeding the recommended dose of Nevirapine may not provide additional benefits, and may increase the risk of side effects.
  • Nevirapine is not a cure for HIV infection and patients may continue to acquire illnesses/infections associated with HIV. Remain under the care of your health care provider.
  • When your medicine supply begins to run low, get more from your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. This virus may develop resistance to Nevirapine if you stop taking it, even for a short period of time, or the virus may become more difficult to treat.
  • Nevirapine offers no protection from the transmission of HIV to others through sexual contact or blood contamination. Use barrier forms of contraception (eg, condoms) if you are infected with HIV.
  • Changes in body fat may occur while you are taking Nevirapine (eg, increased fat in the upper back and stomach areas, decreased fat in the arms and legs).
  • LAB TESTS, including liver function tests, heart and blood tests, and CD4 counts, may be done to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Caution is advised when using Nevirapine in CHILDREN because they may be more sensitive its effects.
  • Nevirapine may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control (eg, condoms).
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Nevirapine during pregnancy. Nevirapine is excreted in breast milk. HIV-infected mothers should not breast-feed their infants because of the risk of transmitting the HIV infection or Nevirapine to the baby.
