Mycamine


Generic Name: Micafungin (mi-ka-FUN-gin)
Brand Name: Mycamine

Mycamine is used for:

Treating fungal infections of the esophagus. It is also used to prevent fungal infections in patients undergoing stem cell transplantation.

Mycamine is an antifungal agent. It works by interfering with the formation of the cell wall of the fungus, which results in the death of the fungus.

Do NOT use Mycamine if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Mycamine

Before using Mycamine :

Some medical conditions may interact with Mycamine . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver or kidney problems, HIV or a weakened immune system, or cancer

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Mycamine . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Nifedipine or sirolimus because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased

How to use Mycamine :

Use Mycamine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Mycamine is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Mycamine at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Mycamine contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Mycamine , contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Mycamine .

Important safety information:

  • LAB TESTS will be required to monitor your progress and to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Use Mycamine with extreme caution in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Mycamine during pregnancy. It is unknown if Mycamine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Mycamine , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Mycamine :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Diarrhea; fever; headache; nausea; rigid muscles; stomach pain; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blood in the urine; chest pain; confusion; dizziness; fainting; hallucinations; itching; pale skin; redness, tenderness, pain, or swelling near the injection site; seizures; shortness of breath; speech problems; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Proper storage of Mycamine :

Store Mycamine at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. After mixing, it may be stored in the original vial for up to 24 hours at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). After it is diluted, Mycamine may be stored for up to 24 hours at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep Mycamine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
