Micardis

Generic Name: Telmisartan (tell-mih-SAHR-tan)
Brand Name: Micardis

When used after the third month of pregnancy, Micardis can cause injury and even death to the developing fetus. Contact your doctor if you suspect that you are pregnant.

Micardis is used for:

Treating high blood pressure. It can be used alone or with other high blood pressure medications.

Micardis is an angiotensin 2 receptor blocker. It works by decreasing certain chemicals in the body that cause blood vessels to constrict (narrow) and sodium and fluid to be stored by the kidneys.

Do NOT use Micardis if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Micardis or similar medications
  • you are past your first trimester of pregnancy

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Micardis :

Some medical conditions may interact with Micardis . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances
  • if you have a biliary obstruction or other liver or kidney disease, low blood volume, or low sodium levels in your blood

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Micardis . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Digoxin, lithium, or potassium-sparing diuretics (eg, spironolactone) because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Micardis may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Micardis :

Use Micardis as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Micardis may be taken with or without food.
  • Do not remove tablets from blister pack until you are ready to use them.
  • Take Micardis at the same time every day.
  • If you miss a dose of Micardis , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Micardis .

Important safety information:

  • Micardis may cause drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, or lightheadedness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Micardis . Using Micardis alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Although Micardis begins to reduce blood pressure after the first dose, it may take 4 weeks to produce the maximum effect.
  • Patients being treated for high blood pressure often feel tired or rundown for a few weeks after beginning therapy. Continue taking your medicine even though you may not feel quite "normal." Contact your health care provider about any new symptoms.
  • LAB TESTS may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Micardis is not recommended for use in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • Use of Micardis during pregnancy has resulted in fetal and newborn death. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. It is unknown if Micardis is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Micardis .
