Why is MetroLotion prescribed?

MetroLotion is a preparation of the drug metronidazole used for the treatment of a skin condition called rosacea (red eruptions, usually on the face). The cream and lotion forms of metronidazole are used for the same problem. All are for external (topical) use only.

Most important fact about MetroLotion

Metronidazole may irritate the skin. If local irritation occurs, consult your doctor. You may need to use the medication less frequently or to discontinue use.

How should you take MetroLotion?

After washing the affected area, apply a thin film of the preparation and rub in. Topical metronidazole should be applied twice daily, in the morning and evening. Cosmetics may be used after the drug is applied. (If using the lotion, wait 5 minutes for it to dry.)

Be sure to wash your hands after applying the medication so as not to irritate the eyes.

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.

Store at room temperature. Protect the lotion from freezing.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using topical metronidazole.

  • More common side effects may include:
    Burning or stinging, dryness, itching, metallic taste, nausea, redness, skin irritation, tingling or numbness of hands and feet, worsening of rosacea

Why should MetroLotion not be prescribed?

Do not use topical metronidazole if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Flagyl or any other metronidazole product, or if you have been told that you are sensitive to chemicals called "parabens."

Special warnings about MetroLotion

This medication may cause tearing of the eye. Avoid contact with the eyes.

Be sure to tell your doctor if you have ever had any diseases or abnormalities of the blood.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking MetroLotion

Oral metronidazole strengthens the activity of blood thinners such as Coumadin. It"s not known whether topical preparations have the same effect.

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

There is no evidence that metronidazole can harm a developing baby. Nevertheless, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor immediately.

Topical metronidazole does find its way into breast milk. You"ll need to choose between nursing your baby or continuing treatment with the drug.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS

Apply a thin layer to the affected area twice a day.

Overdosage

There is no information on overdose with topical forms of metronidazole, but any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
