Mepron

Generic Name: Atovaquone (uh-TOE-vuh-KWONE)
Brand Name: Mepron

Mepron is used for:

Preventing and treating Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in patients who cannot take trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Mepron is an antiprotozoal. How it works to stop the growth of the protozoa is not fully understood. It may interfere with the metabolism of the protozoa by slowing or stopping its growth which helps you to fight the infection.

Do NOT use Mepron if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Mepron

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Mepron :

Some medical conditions may interact with Mepron . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have any stomach or intestinal disorders

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Mepron . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Rifamycins (eg, rifampin, rifabutin) or tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline) because the effectiveness of Mepron may be reduced

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Mepron may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Mepron :

Use Mepron as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Mepron with food or meals. The medicine may be less effective if it is not taken with food. If possible, include foods with a high fat content (eg, whole milk, cheese, ice cream, eggs, fried foods).
  • Shake gently before use.
  • Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure this dose.
  • To clear up your infection completely, continue using Mepron for the full course of treatment even if you feel better in a few days. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Mepron , take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Mepron .

Important safety information:

  • Mepron may cause drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Mepron . Using Mepron alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Continue use until all of the prescribed medicine has been taken. Failure to take all of Mepron may not completely eliminate the protozoa, and may allow the infection to return.
  • LAB TESTS, including complete blood cell count, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • Mepron is not recommended for use in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Mepron during pregnancy. It is unknown if Mepron is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Mepron , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
