Generic Name: Ketamine (KEET-uh-MEEN)
Brand Name: Ketalar

Psychological effects ranging from pleasant, dream-like states to delirium have occurred as Ketalar wears off. Be sure to have a responsible adult to monitor and assist you for up to 24 hours after you receive Ketalar .


Ketalar is used for:

Inducing anesthesia (lack of sensation or feeling) before surgery or certain procedures that do not require skeletal muscle relaxation. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Ketalar is an anesthetic. It works by selectively interrupting certain pathways of the brain to inhibit painful sensations.

Do NOT use Ketalar if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Ketalar
  • you have a condition in which a large increase in blood pressure would be harmful

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Ketalar :

Some medical conditions may interact with Ketalar . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have had head trauma or injury, bleeding in the brain, a stroke, increased spinal fluid pressure, increased pressure in the eye, an eye injury, heart problems, severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, mental disorders, or thyroid problems
  • if you drink 3 or more alcohol-containing drinks a day

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Ketalar . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Amiodarone or droxidopa because serious side effects, such as abnormal heart rhythms, may occur

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Ketalar may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Ketalar :

Use Ketalar as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Ketalar is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic by those experienced in administering general anesthetics and in maintenance of an airway and in the control of respiration.
  • If Ketalar contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Ketalar works best if taken on any empty stomach.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Ketalar , contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Ketalar .

Important safety information:

  • Ketalar may cause drowsiness for up to 24 hours. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous for at least 24 hours following surgery until you know how you react to Ketalar . Using Ketalar alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • Ketalar may cause hallucinations or unpleasant dreams that usually go away within 24 hours.
  • Ketalar is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 16 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is unknown if Ketalar can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Ketalar , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Ketalar during pregnancy. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Ketalar , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Ketalar :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Blurred vision; confusion; drowsiness; increased or decreased blood pressure or heart rate; mental or mood changes; nausea; nightmares; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); difficulty talking; irregular heart rhythms; muscle tightness; pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site; slowed breathing.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include severe slowing or stopping of breathing.

Proper storage of Ketalar :

Ketalar is usually handled and stored by a health care provider. Keep Ketalar out of the reach of children and away from pets.
