Isoproterenol

Isoproterenol is used for:

Treating certain heart problems (eg, heart attack, congestive heart failure), blood vessel problems (eg, shock), and certain types of irregular heartbeat (eg, heart block). It is also used during anesthesia to treat airway constriction. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Isoproterenol is a sympathomimetic. It works by relaxing blood vessels and helping the heart pump blood more efficiently. It helps to relax the airway during anesthesia to help you breathe more easily.

Do NOT use Isoproterenol if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Isoproterenol
• you have a certain type of irregular heartbeat (eg, tachyarrhythmia, certain ventricular arrhythmias), an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), or chest pain due to angina
• you have a fast heartbeat or heart block caused by digoxin toxicity
• you are taking droxidopa or epinephrine

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Isoproterenol :

Some medical conditions may interact with Isoproterenol . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances (especially sulfites)
• if you are sensitive to sympathomimetic amines (eg, phenylephrine)
• if you have asthma, diabetes, heart problems or heart blood vessel problems (eg, coronary artery disease), an overactive thyroid, or high blood pressure

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Isoproterenol . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors (eg, tolcapone) because side effects of Isoproterenol may be increased
• Droxidopa, epinephrine, or inhaled anesthetics (eg, halothane) because the risk of severe side effects such as irregular heartbeat and heart attack may be increased

How to use Isoproterenol :

Use Isoproterenol as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Isoproterenol is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Isoproterenol at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
• If Isoproterenol contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
• If you miss a dose of Isoproterenol , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• Isoproterenol may cause blurred vision or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Isoproterenol . Using Isoproterenol alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
• Some of these products contain sulfites, which can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals (eg, asthma patients). If you have previously had allergic reactions to sulfites, contact your pharmacist to determine if the product you are taking contains sulfites.
• Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Isoproterenol .
• LAB TESTS, including blood pressure, blood gases, urine flow, heart rate, and heart function, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• Use Isoproterenol with extreme caution in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: It is unknown if Isoproterenol can cause harm to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Isoproterenol , discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Isoproterenol during pregnancy. It is unknown if Isoproterenol is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Isoproterenol , check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Isoproterenol :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Dizziness; flushing; headache; mild tremors; nausea; nervousness; paleness; sweating; weakness.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision; chest pain; fast or irregular heartbeat; severe headache or dizziness; wheezing.
