Gold Sodium Thiomalate is used for:

Treating rheumatoid arthritis as part of a complete program of therapy. It should not be used alone to treat arthritis. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Gold Sodium Thiomalate is an antirheumatic agent. It works by suppressing inflammation in the body.

Do NOT use Gold Sodium Thiomalate if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Gold Sodium Thiomalate or have had a severe allergic reaction to previous exposure to gold or other heavy metals
• you are severely debilitated or have systemic lupus erythematosus

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Gold Sodium Thiomalate :

Some medical conditions may interact with Gold Sodium Thiomalate . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

• if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
• if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
• if you have diabetes, congestive heart failure or other heart problems, circulation disorders, high blood pressure, Sjögren syndrome, liver or kidney problems, or recently had radiation therapy
• if you have itching, dryness, peeling, or a skin rash (eg, eczema, hives)
• if you have a history of blood disorders (eg, anemia) caused by medicine or you bleed easily

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Gold Sodium Thiomalate . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

• Penicillamine because the risk of kidney problems and blood disorders may be increased

How to use Gold Sodium Thiomalate :

Use Gold Sodium Thiomalate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Gold Sodium Thiomalate is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Gold Sodium Thiomalate at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
• If Gold Sodium Thiomalate contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
• If you miss a dose of Gold Sodium Thiomalate , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:

• After you receive an injection, you may experience flushing, dizziness, or sweating. These effects will usually disappear if you lie down for a few minutes.
• Gold Sodium Thiomalate may cause increased sensitivity to the sun and skin reactions such as itching, redness, or inflammation that may be worsened with exposure to the sun. Avoid exposure to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Gold Sodium Thiomalate . Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for a prolonged period.
• Gold Sodium Thiomalate may reduce the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your blood. To prevent bleeding, avoid situations in which bruising or injury may occur. Report any unusual bleeding, bruising, blood in stools, or dark, tarry stools to your doctor.
• Three to 6 months may pass before you feel the full effect of Gold Sodium Thiomalate . Continue using injections during this time.
• Joint pain may be worse for 1 or 2 days after your injection but it should end after the first few injections.
• LAB TESTS, including complete blood cell counts and urine samples, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
• PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Gold Sodium Thiomalate during pregnancy. Gold Sodium Thiomalate is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Gold Sodium Thiomalate .

Possible side effects of Gold Sodium Thiomalate :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Stomach cramps.

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blood in urine; cough; dark urine; metallic taste; mouth sores; nausea; pain or numbness in the hands or feet; persistent diarrhea; purple blotches or other skin spots; seizures; shortness of breath; sore throat; thickening of the tongue; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual weakness; vision problems; vomiting.

Store Gold Sodium Thiomalate at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Gold Sodium Thiomalate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
