Fulvestrant


Generic Name: Fulvestrant (fool-VES-trant)
Brand Name: Faslodex

Fulvestrant is used for:

Treating certain types of advanced breast cancer in women after menopause who have not responded well to other medicines (eg, antiestrogen drugs) or therapy. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Fulvestrant is an estrogen receptor antagonist. It works by blocking estrogen from tumors that need estrogen to grow.

Do NOT use Fulvestrant if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Fulvestrant
  • you are pregnant
  • you are taking an anticoagulant (eg, warfarin, heparin)
  • you have low blood platelet levels or a history of bleeding or blood clotting problems

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Fulvestrant :

Some medical conditions may interact with Fulvestrant . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you plan to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Fulvestrant . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Anticoagulants (eg, heparin, warfarin) because risk of bleeding may be increased by Fulvestrant

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Fulvestrant may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Fulvestrant :

Use Fulvestrant as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Fulvestrant is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Fulvestrant at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Fulvestrant contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Fulvestrant , contact your doctor immediately.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Fulvestrant .

Important safety information:

  • Fulvestrant may cause dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Fulvestrant . Using Fulvestrant alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks
  • Avoid becoming pregnant while you are using Fulvestrant . Your doctor should make sure that you are not pregnant before you begin using Fulvestrant .
  • Use Fulvestrant with extreme caution in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use Fulvestrant if you are pregnant. If you suspect that you could be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. It is unknown if Fulvestrant is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Fulvestrant .

Possible side effects of Fulvestrant :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal skin sensations; anxiety; back, bone, joint, or pelvic pain; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; headache; hot flushes; increased cough; loss of appetite; nausea; pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; sleeplessness; sore throat; stomach pain; sweating; vomiting; weakness.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain; depression; fever or chills; frequent or painful urination; mental or mood changes; pain, redness, or tenderness in the legs; persistent sore throat; persistent vaginal bleeding; severe tiredness or weakness; shortness of breath; swelling of the hands or feet.

Proper storage of Fulvestrant :

Store Fulvestrant in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C), in the original carton. Do not freeze. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
