Exelon

Generic Name: Rivastigmine Capsules (rye-vah-STIG-meen)
Brand Name: Exelon

Exelon is used for:

Treating mild to moderate impairment of memory, judgment, and abstract thinking, as well as changes in personality caused by Alzheimer disease.

Exelon is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by slowing the breakdown of a chemical in the brain, which increases the amount of that chemical in the brain. This chemical is thought to have an effect on memory and thinking ability. There is no evidence that Exelon alters the course of Alzheimer disease.

Do NOT use Exelon if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Exelon .

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Exelon :

Some medical conditions may interact with Exelon . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines or other substances
  • if you have heart problems (eg, slow or irregular heartbeat, sick sinus syndrome), breathing problems (eg, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]), seizures (eg, epilepsy), ulcer, kidney problems, or urinary blockage

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Exelon . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Cholinergic agonists (eg, bethanecol), cholinesterase inhibitors (eg, donepezil), or neuromuscular blockers (eg, succinylcholine) because the actions and side effects of both medicines may be increased
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen) because the risk of side effects, such as stomach bleeding, may be increased
  • Anticholinergics (eg, oxybutynin, scopolamine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Exelon

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Exelon may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Exelon :
