Ethotoin


Generic Name: Ethotoin (ETH-oh-toin)
Brand Name: Peganone

Ethotoin is used for:

Treating certain types of seizures. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Ethotoin is a hydantoin anticonvulsant. It works by reducing the spread of seizure activity in the brain.

Do NOT use Ethotoin if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Ethotoin
  • you have liver problems or blood problems (eg, porphyria)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Ethotoin :

Some medical conditions may interact with Ethotoin . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have a history of alcohol abuse or dependence

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Ethotoin . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Antineoplastics (eg, cyclophosphamide), corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), diazoxide, folic acid, or rifampin because they may decrease Ethotoin "s effectiveness
  • Amiodarone, benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), carbamazepine, chloramphenicol, cimetidine, disulfiram, felbamate, fluconazole, fluoxetine, isoniazid, phenacemide, phenylbutazones (eg, sulfinpyrazone), stiripentol, sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), sulthiame, ticlopidine, trimethoprim, or valproic acid because the risk of loss of coordination and involuntary eye movements may be increased
  • Primidone because the risk of its side effects may be increased by Ethotoin
  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), cyclosporine, disopyramide, doxycycline, estrogens (eg, estradiol), gefitinib, hormonal contraceptives (eg, birth control pills), itraconazole, mexiletine, progestins (eg, medroxyprogesterone), psoralens (eg, methoxsalen), quetiapine, quinidine, or tetracyclic antidepressants (eg, mirtazapine) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Ethotoin
  • Immune globulin because an unexpected allergic reaction may occur

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Ethotoin may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Ethotoin :

Use Ethotoin as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Ethotoin by mouth with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
  • Continue to take Ethotoin even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
  • If you miss a dose of Ethotoin , take it as soon as possible. If it is within 4 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once. If you miss doses for 2 or more days in a row or you have questions about the dose, check with your doctor as soon as possible.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Ethotoin .

Important safety information:

  • Ethotoin may cause dizziness or blurred vision. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Ethotoin with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Ethotoin unless you have discussed it with your doctor.
  • Proper dental care is important while you are taking Ethotoin . Brush and floss your teeth and visit the dentist regularly.
  • Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Ethotoin before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.
  • Carry an ID card at all times that says you take Ethotoin .
  • Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Ethotoin . To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).
  • Lab tests, including liver function, complete blood cell counts, and urine tests, may be performed while you use Ethotoin . These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: Ethotoin may cause harm to the fetus. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Ethotoin while you are pregnant. Ethotoin is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Ethotoin .

Possible side effects of Ethotoin :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Dizziness; nausea; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); blurred vision or other vision changes; chest pain; clumsiness or unsteadiness; fever, chills, or sore throat; general body discomfort; headache; joint pain; loss of coordination; nosebleed; numbness; reddened, swollen, or blistered skin; slurred speech; small red spots under the skin; swollen glands; trouble sleeping; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual eye movements; unusual weakness or fatigue; yellowing of the skin or eyes.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include drowsiness; loss of consciousness; loss of coordination; severe or persistent nausea; vision changes.

Proper storage of Ethotoin :

Store Ethotoin below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Ethotoin out of the reach of children and away from pets.
