Diphenhydramine Solution

Generic Name: Diphenhydramine Injection Solution (dye-fen-HYE-dra-meen)
Brand Name: Examples include Benadryl

Diphenhydramine Solution is used for:

Treating allergic reactions, allergy symptoms, motion sickness, and Parkinson disease when treatment with medicine taken by mouth is not possible. It may also be used to treat certain conditions as determined by your doctor.

Diphenhydramine Solution is an antihistamine and anticholinergic. It works by blocking the action of histamine, which reduces the symptoms of an allergic reaction. It also works in the brain to reduce symptoms of Parkinson disease and motion sickness.

Do NOT use Diphenhydramine Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Diphenhydramine Solution or to similar medicines
  • you are taking sodium oxybate (GHB)
  • you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, phenelzine) in the past 2 weeks
  • you are breast-feeding

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Diphenhydramine Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Diphenhydramine Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema, lung disease, shortness of breath, or sleep apnea
  • if you have blockage of the stomach, intestine, or urinary tract; difficulty urinating; diabetes; ulcers; enlargement of the prostate; glaucoma; heart disease; high blood pressure; porphyria; or thyroid disease

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Diphenhydramine Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Sodium oxybate (GHB) because an increase in sleep duration and a decrease in the ability to breathe are likely to occur
  • MAO inhibitors (eg, phenelzine) because they can cause serious, possibly life-threatening, reactions. Do NOT take MAO inhibitors within 2 weeks of taking Diphenhydramine Solution.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Diphenhydramine Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Diphenhydramine Solution:

Use Diphenhydramine Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Diphenhydramine Solution is for injection only.
  • Diphenhydramine Solution is usually administered as an injection at your doctor"s office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Diphenhydramine Solution at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
