Diamode


Generic Name: Loperamide Tablets (loe-PER-a-mide)
Brand Name: Examples include Diamode and Imodium A-D

Diamode is used for:

Treating and controlling diarrhea, including traveler"s diarrhea.

Diamode is an antiperistaltic agent. It acts on intestinal muscles and slows the movement of water and solids through the intestines.

Do NOT use Diamode if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Diamode
  • you have dysentery or bloody diarrhea with high fever
  • you have stomach pain without diarrhea
  • the patient is a child younger than 2 years of age

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Diamode :

Some medical conditions may interact with Diamode . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver disease, infectious diarrhea, or other bowel problems (eg, ulcerative colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, blockage, enlarged colon)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Diamode . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Guanidine or ritonavir because the side effects of Diamode may be increased
  • Saquinavir because the effectiveness may be decreased by Diamode

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Diamode may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Diamode :

Use Diamode as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Diamode may be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
  • Drink extra fluids while you are taking Diamode and while you have diarrhea.
  • Do not use for more than 2 days unless directed by a doctor.
  • If you miss a dose of Diamode and are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Diamode .

Important safety information:

  • Diamode may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Diamode . Using Diamode alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
  • If your diarrhea does not improve within 48 hours or if you develop a fever, stop using Diamode and contact your doctor.
  • Diamode is used to treat the symptoms of diarrhea, but will not treat the condition causing the diarrhea. Check with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about the cause of your diarrhea.
  • Diamode may cause dry mouth. Chew sugarless gum or suck sugarless hard candy to reduce this effect.
  • Diamode is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 1 year of age.
  • Use Diamode with extreme caution in CHILDREN 1 to 18 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Diamode during pregnancy. It is unknown if Diamode is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while using Diamode .

Possible side effects of Diamode :

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. When used in small doses, no COMMON side effects have been reported with this product. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloating; blood in the stools; constipation; decreased urination; difficulty breathing; fever; nausea; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; stomach swelling; sudden abdominal pain or discomfort; swelling of the throat; vomiting.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include constipation; drowsiness or deep sleep; nausea; slow pulse; slowed breathing; vomiting.

Proper storage of Diamode :

Store at room temperature, between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Diamode out of the reach of children and away from pets.
