Cortisporin-TC Otic

Generic name: Colistin sulfate, Neomycin sulfate, Hydrocortisone acetate, Thonzonium bromide
Brand names: Cortisporin-TC Otic

Why is Cortisporin-TC Otic prescribed?

Cortisporin-TC is a liquid suspension used to treat external ear infections. They may also be prescribed after ear surgery such as a mastoidectomy.

Colistin sulfate and neomycin sulfate are antibiotics used to treat the bacterial infection itself, while hydrocortisone acetate is a steroid that helps reduce the inflammation, swelling, itching, and other skin reactions associated with an ear infection; thonzonium bromide facilitates the drug"s effects.

Most important fact about Cortisporin-TC Otic

As with other antibiotics, long-term treatment may encourage other infections. Therefore, if your ear infection does not improve within a week, your physician may want to change your medication.

How should you use Cortisporin-TC Otic?

Use this product for the full course of treatment (but no more than 10 days) even if you start to feel better in a few days.

Shake well before using. You can warm the suspension, but avoid heating it above body temperature. Excessive heat will reduce potency.

The external ear canal should be thoroughly cleaned and dried with a sterile cotton swab (applicator). The patient should lie with the infected ear facing up. Pull the earlobe down and back (for children) or up and back (for adults) to straighten the ear canal. Drop the suspension into the ear. The patient should lie in this position for 5 minutes to help the drops penetrate into the ear. If necessary, this procedure should be repeated for the other ear. To keep the medicine from leaking out, you can gently insert a sterile cotton plug.

If you prefer, a sterile cotton wick or plug may be inserted into the ear canal and then soaked with the suspension. This cotton wick should be moistened every 4 hours with more suspension and replaced at least once every 24 hours.

Avoid touching the dropper to the ear or other surfaces, and be careful to avoid getting the medication in your eyes.

--If you miss a dose...

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule.

--Storage instructions...

Store at room temperature; avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The medication expires after 18 months.

What side effects may occur?

No specific side effects have been reported; however, neomycin may be associated with an increased risk of allergic skin reaction.

Why should Cortisporin-TC Otic not be prescribed?

You should not take Cortisporin-TC Otic if you have had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients, or if you suffer from herpes simplex, vaccinia (cowpox), or varicella (chickenpox).

Special warnings about Cortisporin-TC Otic
