Canasa Suppositories

Generic Name: Mesalamine Suppositories (me-SAL-a-meen)
Brand Name: Canasa

Canasa Suppositories is used for:

Treating various forms of mild to moderate inflammation of the colon.

Canasa Suppositories is a 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). It works by preventing the production of substances that cause the inflammation of the colon.

Do NOT use Canasa Suppositories if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Canasa Suppositories, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, naproxen), or salicylates (eg, aspirin)
  • you are younger than 18 years of age and you have the flu or chicken pox
  • you are taking probenecid or sulfinpyrazone

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Canasa Suppositories:

Some medical conditions may interact with Canasa Suppositories. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have had a stroke, bleeding in the brain, or an aneurysm
  • if you have Kawasaki syndrome, the flu, chicken pox, or a rheumatic (inflammatory) disease (eg, osteoarthritis)

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Canasa Suppositories. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (eg, acetazolamide) because the effectiveness of Canasa Suppositories may be decreased
  • Gingko biloba extract because side effects, such as increased bleeding, may occur
  • Insulin, meglitinide antidiabetics (eg, repaglinide), sulfonylureas (eg, glipizide), or valproic acid because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril), anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), probenecid, or sulfinpyrazone because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Canasa Suppositories may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Canasa Suppositories:

Use Canasa Suppositories as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • If the suppository is too soft to use, put it in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes or run cold water over it. Then remove the wrapper and moisten the suppository with cool water. Lie down on your side. Use your finger to push the pointed end of the suppository well up into the rectum.
  • Do not handle the suppository too much. This will cause the suppository to melt before it can be inserted.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using Canasa Suppositories.
  • For best results, keep the suppository inserted for at least 1 to 3 hours.
  • Continue to use Canasa Suppositories for the entire course of treatment.
  • If you miss a dose of Canasa Suppositories, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Canasa Suppositories.
