Brand Name: Examples include Asthmahaler and Primatene Mist

Asthmahaler Aerosol is used for:

Asthmahaler Aerosol is an alpha- and beta-receptor stimulant. It works by widening the airway, which makes it easier to breathe.

Do NOT use Asthmahaler Aerosol if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Asthmahaler Aerosol
  • you have taken furazolidone or a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, phenelzine) within the past 14 days

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Asthmahaler Aerosol:

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have an overactive thyroid, urinary problems, an enlarged prostate, diabetes, high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, irregular heartbeat, or other heart problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Asthmahaler Aerosol. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), droxidopa, or phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine) because the risk of high or low blood pressure and fast or slow heartbeat may be increased

  • Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors (eg, entacapone), digoxin, or medicines for irregular heartbeat (eg, quinidine) because the effects of Asthmahaler Aerosol may be increased

  • Asthmahaler Aerosol comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Asthmahaler Aerosol refilled. Ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions that you may have about Asthmahaler Aerosol.
  • Before using Asthmahaler Aerosol, be sure that the canister is properly inserted into the inhaler unit and shake well. Exhale slowly and completely. Unless your doctor has told you otherwise, position the mouthpiece between your lips and try to rest your tongue flat. Your doctor may have told you to hold the inhaler 1 or 2 inches (2 or 3 centimeters) away from the open mouth or may have instructed you to use a special spacing device. As you start to take a slow deep breath, press the canister and mouthpiece together at exactly the same time to administer a dose of Asthmahaler Aerosol. Continue inhaling slowly and deeply and hold for as long as comfortable, then exhale slowly through pursed lips or through nose. If more than 1 inhalation is to be used, wait a few minutes and repeat the above process. Keep the spray away from your eyes.
  • If you miss a dose of Asthmahaler Aerosol, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
