Amerge

Generic Name: Naratriptan (NAHR-ah-trip-tan)
Brand Name: Amerge

Amerge is used for:

Relieving migraine headache attacks as they occur. Amerge will not prevent or reduce the number of attacks you experience. Amerge may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Amerge is a serotonin 5-HT1 receptor agonist. It works by constricting dilated blood vessels in the brain.

Do NOT use Amerge if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Amerge
  • you have heart disease, angina (chest pain), hemiplegic or basilar migraines, severe liver or kidney problems, blood flow problems, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, or you have had a stroke
  • you have taken an ergot alkaloid or another 5-HT1 receptor agonist within the last 24 hours

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Amerge :

Some medical conditions may interact with Amerge . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • if you smoke or are overweight
  • if you suffer from cluster headaches
  • if you have diabetes, high cholesterol, or kidney or liver disease
  • if you are a woman past menopause or have had a hysterectomy

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Amerge . Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine) because the effectiveness of Amerge may be decreased
  • Dexfenfluramine, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (eg, phenelzine), SSRIs (eg, fluoxetine), or sibutramine because side effects, such as increased spasms in the blood vessels or serotonin syndrome (eg, restlessness, excessive sweating, or seizures), may occur
